Parent guide
A free guide to choosing childcare in St Albans.
Choosing childcare is a big decision, and with so many options available in St Albans, it can be difficult to know where to start.
I created this guide to share some of that experience with local parents. It's completely free and isn't intended to tell you which setting you should choose. Instead, I want to help you understand the different childcare options available in St Albans, highlight some settings I think are worth looking at, and share the things I'd encourage any parent to consider when choosing a place for their child.
Hopefully, it gives you a useful starting point as you explore what's right for your family.
When you're looking for childcare in St Albans, you'll find several different types of early years provision. The three options most families consider are nurseries, childminders and nannies.
I'm Bobby Federici, co-founder of Kindërling, a qualified Early Years Teacher with more than 10 years' experience working in and leading nursery settings in and around St Albans. Over that time, I've worked with many different types of childcare settings and have seen first-hand the things that can make a real difference to a child's experience.

Nurseries in St Albans provide early years childcare in dedicated nursery settings, usually with a team of qualified and experienced practitioners caring for groups of children.
Nurseries can offer a wide range of activities, resources and opportunities for children to learn and play alongside other children. Many offer full-day places and flexible hours throughout the year, making them a popular choice for working families.
Nurseries vary considerably in size, atmosphere and approach, so visiting several can be a useful way to see which environment feels right for your child.

Childminders in St Albans provide childcare from their own home, usually caring for a smaller group of children than a typical nursery.
A childminder can offer a more home-based environment, with familiar adults, smaller groups and the opportunity to develop close relationships with each child. Some childminders also offer outings, outdoor activities and experiences beyond the home.
Childminders can be particularly appealing to families looking for a more personal approach to early years childcare, although every childminding setting is different.

Nannies provide childcare in your own home, offering one-to-one or highly personalised care around your family's needs.
For families looking for flexible childcare, a nanny can provide care around working hours, school runs and other family commitments. Children remain in their familiar home environment, and a nanny can tailor activities and routines to their individual needs.
Nannies can be a particularly flexible option, although the cost and employment arrangements are different from using a nursery or childminder.

Things to consider
Childminders and nannies can be a great option for families looking for a more individual or flexible form of childcare. Unlike nurseries, however, they are usually individuals rather than settings that parents can simply visit and compare in the same way.
If you're considering a childminder or nanny in St Albans, websites such as Childcare.co.uk can be a useful place to search for local providers, compare profiles and make contact directly.
For this guide, I've chosen to focus my recommendations on independent nurseries.
I've worked in both independent and chain nursery settings during my career, and my experience has shaped my preference for independently run settings. In some chain settings, I found that decisions around profitability, admissions, staffing and wider business pressures could sometimes compete with what I felt was best for the children and the quality of their day-to-day experience.
That isn't to say that every chain nursery is the same, or that independent nurseries are automatically better. There are excellent settings of both types. However, when I'm recommending places for parents to explore, I'm particularly interested in settings where the people running the nursery are closely involved in its day-to-day life and where decisions can be made locally, with the children at the centre.
The settings below are all independent providers that I think are worth parents exploring. They are very different from one another, and I've deliberately included a range of approaches rather than trying to identify a single "best" nursery.
My aim isn't to tell you where you should send your child. It's to give you a starting point and highlight some settings that I believe are worth visiting and finding out more about for yourself.
I have a personal connection to one of the nurseries included in this guide. Mount Carmel Kindergarten is my parents’ nursery, and it is also where I trained, qualified and gained many years of experience in early years. I genuinely believe it is a very special place for children, but I wanted to be open about my connection when including it in this guide.
Albany Montessori is an independent Montessori nursery run and managed by a husband-and-wife team who have been at the heart of the setting for more than 20 years. They were among the first to establish a Montessori nursery in St Albans and have maintained a strong commitment to the Montessori approach throughout that time.
It is a smaller setting with a warm and nurturing atmosphere. In my experience, there is a genuine emphasis on getting to know each child and their family, creating an environment where families feel welcomed and children can settle into nursery life at their own pace.
For parents who are interested in the Montessori approach and are looking for a smaller, more personal nursery environment, Albany Montessori is a setting I'd recommend exploring.
Mount Carmel is a family-owned nursery that has been part of the St Albans early years community since 1985. Its Kinder Lodge setting is a purpose-built log cabin set within beautiful greenbelt playing fields, with a spacious outdoor environment for children to explore.
One of the things that makes Mount Carmel particularly distinctive is its carousel approach. Children learn in small groups and move with their teachers between the nursery's different learning rooms throughout the day, giving them access to a variety of experiences and learning environments.
In my experience, Mount Carmel has a feel that is closer to a pre-prep nursery, with a strong educational focus and a clear sense of preparing children for their next stage of education. It also has an excellent reputation for preparing children for both local state and independent schools.
For parents looking for a nursery with a distinctive educational approach, excellent outdoor space and a strong sense of preparation for school, I think Mount Carmel is well worth visiting.
Little Steps is a long-established independent nursery that has been part of the St Albans childcare community since 1999. Based in a large house in a residential area, it has a distinctly homely atmosphere rather than the feel of a large purpose-built nursery.
The setting has a warm and welcoming feel, with an emphasis on creating an environment where children can feel secure and comfortable. Its long history in the local community means it has supported generations of St Albans families over the years.
Little Steps is open Monday to Friday, 7:45am to 6:00pm, for 51 weeks of the year, giving families a high degree of flexibility around their childcare needs.
For parents looking for a long-established nursery with a more homely atmosphere, Little Steps is a setting I'd suggest exploring.
Old London Road Pre-School is a community pre-school in the heart of St Albans, with a history stretching back many years. It was relaunched in 1999 and became a registered non-profit charity in 2000. The setting is run by a management committee made up of parents and supporters, giving it a distinctive community feel.
The pre-school has a long-standing team, with its current leader having worked in childcare since 1981. Its approach places a strong emphasis on learning through play, with children offered a balance of activities and experiences across the Early Years Foundation Stage.
The setting also has a strong inspection history. Its previous Ofsted inspection in 2020 judged the provision Outstanding, while its 2026 inspection under the new framework recognised strong standards in behaviour, attitudes and routines, children's welfare and wellbeing, and inclusion.
For parents looking for a community-based, term-time pre-school with an established team and a strong emphasis on learning through play, Old London Road is an interesting option to explore.
St Albans Steiner Kindergarten has been part of the local early years community since 1982 and follows the educational principles of Rudolf Steiner. It is a registered charity and offers a distinctive approach to early childhood, with a particular emphasis on natural materials, imaginative play and allowing children time and space to develop at their own pace.
The kindergarten describes its environment as warm and family-like, with an emphasis on treating each child as an individual and gently supporting their growing independence. Nature and the changing seasons are also an important part of life at the setting, with gardening, crafts, songs and seasonal activities forming part of the children's experiences.
It is quite different from a conventional full-day nursery. The kindergarten operates during school terms, with sessions beginning at 9:30am and longer sessions available on some days.
For parents who are interested in the Steiner approach and are looking for a smaller, more traditional kindergarten experience centred around imaginative play, nature and a gentler pace, this is certainly a setting worth exploring.

Wainscot House Day Nursery has been part of the St Albans childcare community since 1992. Founded by a local mother, it remains a family-run setting with a long history of caring for local families.
The nursery is based in a converted Victorian house, alongside a purpose-built pre-school Woodland Class, with gardens and outdoor play areas. It places a strong emphasis on getting to know each child as an individual while offering the resources and experiences of a larger nursery.
Wainscot is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, throughout the year apart from public holidays and the Christmas and New Year period. Its most recent Ofsted inspection, in June 2024, judged the provision Good.
For families looking for an established, family-run nursery with long opening hours and an emphasis on individual care, Wainscot House is worth exploring.
If you're looking for childcare in St Albans, you may have already explored some of the nurseries in the area and started to get a feel for the different options available. Perhaps you're looking for something a little smaller and more personal, or an environment that feels less like a traditional nursery. Kindërling offers an alternative: a small, home-based setting that combines the experience and approach of a nursery with the close relationships and personal feel of a childminder. We believe this gives children the opportunity to enjoy a rich early years experience while still benefiting from the warmth, familiarity and individual attention that comes with being part of a small group.

Kindërling is a registered childminding setting, caring for a small group of children in a warm, home-based environment. With fewer children and familiar adults, we can get to know each child really well and give them the individual attention and support they need.

We've brought together the experience and structure of a nursery environment with the warmth and personal feel of a family home. Children have a purpose-built nursery cabin with dedicated spaces for learning and play, while still benefiting from the relaxed atmosphere of a home-based setting.

At Kindërling, learning isn't confined to activities around a table. Children spend time outdoors, explore our allotment, help care for our chickens and discover the world around them, giving them opportunities to learn through real experiences and everyday life.

We want children to feel confident, curious and independent. Our approach gives them the time and space to follow their interests, try things for themselves, develop relationships and enjoy childhood in a calm, nurturing environment.
The best way to understand what makes Kindërling different is to come and see it for yourself.
